Occassional (July 2014)

July 2014

I wanted to take this opportunity to say an enormous THANK YOU to everyone that put so much time, effort and energy into making this year's Mother's Day Home Tour the success that it was! I'm personally extremely grateful for everyone that stepped in to fill important roles to get the job done, put their beautiful homes on tour, helped sustain the district for another year, and helped our Mother's Day tradition grow even bigger and better. For those that did not get the opportunity to attend, I will say that you missed a collection of absolutely stunning homes, great art and entertainment, and a gorgeous weekend! I don't think there is a better time to live in our historic district than on Mother's Day weekend!

In our continuous effort to foster the "small town" feel of our district, and in an attempt to get to know everyone in the neighborhood, the district has regularly been sponsoring community socials at local establishments every few weeks. The neighborhood social at Matt's in May, and Stoney's Wine Lounge in June were both well attended, and a lot of fun! We'll keep you apprised of when and where the next social will be. Look for another social in late July or early August at another fun (and local) watering hole! There's no better way to get to know your neighbors, and try some fun and vibrant local establishments, than at oneof our neighborhood socials.

As a reminder for those that have not yet signed up as residents on our website, please do so today! Signing up will help us stay in contact with you, will make Jody Bowers' job as secretary a bit easier, and will help you stay up to date with what is going on in our neighborhood. In addition to the monthly meetings we hold at Aldredge House on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, Jody's neighborhood emails and the information we post on the website are a great way to keep up with what is going on in our neighborhood.

Speaking of monthly meetings - they are a great way to meet your neighbors, weigh in on important neighborhood issues, and find out about what makes our district run. Please come out! As a reminder, our August and September meetings are generally some of the more important meetings of the year - especially as they involve our annual budgeting process. So please put those dates on your calendar (August 19 and September 16), and plan to attend. As always, the social hour starts at 6:30 pm and the meeting begins at 7:00 pm, both at Aldredge House.

Keeping our district safe from crime is of utmost importance, so I would like to give everyone a friendly reminder that if you see something suspicious, please do call the police and report it immediately. While violent crime appears to be down in our part of East Dallas, a recent spate of petty thefts shows that vigilance is more important than ever. A bit of extra awareness, additional police patrols and easy steps to secure your property (security cameras, securing front porch furniture, etc.) will likely help keep those that target our district at bay. The Alliance Against Crime is working closely with the police to keep our neighborhood safe, but they need your help to report problems and stop crime before it starts. So keep your eyes open, and let your neighbors, friends and the police know if you see a problem so that they can watch for something similar.

Finally, I want to personally thank all of the residents in our district for allowing me the honor and privilege of being your SAHDA President this past year. I've greatly enjoyed my time in that position, and it has been wonderful getting to know many more of you on a personal level. Natalie and I (and Baron and Clementine, our two puppies) feel we are truly blessed to be part of this community, and to call you all our friends and neighbors. As we look forward to the remainder of 2014, and into 2015, I cannot stress enough how important you - the residents that live in our district - are to its continued success and prosperity. Without you and your efforts, there would be no district, and our community would be a less vibrant place. So for those who haven't yet gotten involved, or have been taking some "time off", please get reengaged. Our brightest days are ahead, and we would love for everyone to join together to be an active part of them!

Cameron Kinvig, SAHDA President
