Minutes of the Monthly Meeting

June 16, 2015

The June 16, 2015 meeting of the SAHDA took place at the Aldredge House. President Joanna Hampton called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

The May minutes were presented for approval. A motion was made and seconded and the minutes were approved.

Copies of the Treasurer’s report were available.  Peter Loh, Treasurer reported that he had given $4500 in refunds for the rained out Sunday during Home Tour. The Thirty days is now up. We have $170,000 cash on hand. We are behind in Alliance Against Crime fundraising.

Larry Waisanen reported that we netted a little over $40,000 for Home Tour this year. He thought that was pretty good for one day.

Marilyn Waisanen reported for the Beautification committee.  The district is working on a contract with the city. There will be a walk-through Savage Park and the Fitzhugh gates in the Fall. She said there will be a code compliance walk in five to six weeks. The city put a flyer on everyone’s door reminding them that they are responsible for their property from the curb to the middle of the alley. It listed things they will be looking for, but specifically the alleyway.

Robin Marin gave the Alliance Against Crime report. There has been a report of dumping in the alley in the 4900 block. A resident also reported being slapped on the behind by an adolescent riding his bicycle down Swiss Avenue. There was a report of youths on top of a guest house and possible drug drop.

Natalie Bodak reported that the social committee planned a Happy Hour on June 26.

Bob Cox said there was a place to request Home Tour refunds on our website.

Joanna reported for the Planning and Zoning committee. The car wash on La Vista has been purchased. The new owners are requesting permission to build a medical office there. They are requesting a 10’ landscape variance. She said that the district will reach out and ask for more information. We would like to know the size of the property and landscape plan. The owners posted notices on the doors of neighbors being affected.  There has been surveying taking place on La Vista. Joanna said the district will reach out to the purpose.

Pauline Mayfield gave the Outreach committee report. The 2014-2015 distributions are done. Friends of J.L. Long has requested funds to update boys and girls lockers. If anyone wants to donate personally please contact Pauline or Joanna.

Old Business – Downtown Historic task force update.  The City Council was briefed on taskforce recommendations June 3rd.  The SAHDA was asked to write a letter in support of the taskforce recommendations as the City’s first historic district which was the kick off of the historic preservation initiative in the city.  The Board voted to approve the letter at the May board meeting.  SAHDA joined 13 other organizations including the American Planning Association, The Real Estate Council, Greater Dallas Planning Council, American Institute of Architects/Dallas chapter and Preservation Dallas among others.

Aldredge House follow up from May meeting discussion.  Aldredge House is listed in the SAHD Ordinance as a recognized non-conforming use. There has been various mention of an agreement between the District and the Aldredge House.  No document has been located; however the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance (DCMSA) does maintain ‘house rules’.  These include many of the items mentioned in relation to an agreement with the District.  See Joanna for a copy.   DCMSA is a non-profit versus a business.  General permitted use “social club”.   Joanna will invite Wendy Hansen/ DCMSA to the September meeting to update the District on their efforts to address resident concerns and also allow residents to ask questions and share concerns.

New Business – Historic tax credit is sunsetting. There will be public meetings coming up for anyone interested in providing comments on this program.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30

There will be no meeting in July
