Minutes of the Monthly Meeting

February 16, 2016


The February 16, 2016 meeting of the SAHDA took place at the Aldredge House.

President Joanna Hampton called the meeting to order at 7:03.

Joanna introduced Kay Crews. She asked permission to have Kay act as Parliamentarian for the evening. There were no objections.

The January minutes were presented for corrections. The minutes were accepted into record.

Joanna introduced our guest speaker, Marcus Stephens. Marcus is with 911 Wildlife.

  • Marcus explained that hazing is the method to deter urban coyotes, rather than relocating them.  He said we should be aggressive with them, by yelling or spraying them.
  • Feed birds and cats once a day.  Pick up any left- over food.  42% of coyote diet are rats, mice and squirrels.
  • February is mating season, pups will arrive in April.
  • Only Alpha male and Alpha female breed.

Peter Loh gave the Treasurer’s report.

  • Alliance against Crime solicitation letter received $6,000 year-to-date.
  • At the January meeting, Larry Waisanen inquired about the $20,000 listed as contingency.  Peter  explained that this was miss-classified. These  were remaining funds to be spent on the median.
  • Cameron (please re-state your explanation $43K remaining, $36K has been spent, comes out of $60K available funds. Will send letter by email.???

Joanna gave the Home Tour committee report.

  • $9,000 in sponsorships secured to date.
  • Need four to five more houses.

Robin Marin gave the Alliance against Crime report.

  • Homeless man seen on her porch and trying doors.
  • Will discuss priorities from the survey results at another meeting.
    • Hours of police patrol was number one item.
    • Additional lighting and signage was second priority.

Marilyn Waisanen reported for the Beautification committee.

  • Contractor has finished with brick and concrete. Lighting is coming.

Landscaping will be done in March.

  • Committee will investigate and propose what to do about five stolen bronze plaques.

Natalie Kinvig reminded us that the next SAHDA social will be February 26th at Times Ten Cellars.

Joanna reported for the Planning and Zoning committee.

  • Larry Offutt moved to add Neal Michel as a representative for the 6200 of Bryan Pkwy.

Cameron Kinvig seconded and the motion carried.

  • Committee charter was reviewed at the February 9th meeting.
  • The Lakewood theatre and the large lot at Collette were discussed. No action to be taken.
  • Next meeting scheduled for April 12.

Lanc Parker gave the Outreach committee report.

  • Checks are going out for this year’s outreach beneficiaries.
  • Cameron Kinvig will draft a letter for applicants stating that future giving will be for education related projects.

Unfinished business –

  • Joanna suggested that we wait until after the Home Tour to authorize a committee to review the SAHDA by-laws.
  •  The Aldredge house re-zoning case has been pushed out. Jean Dean made a motion to move the special meeting  until early April.  Peter Loh seconded the motion and the motion carried.

New business –

  • Gaye Martin has been elected to replace Robert Thomas as block director for the 5943-6019 block of Bryan Parkway. Larry Offutt has resigned as alternate.
  • Craig Scheef has been elected as alternate for the  5803 - 5916 block of Swiss Avenue.
  • A special meeting was held February 10. The Board adopted a resolution to remain neutral on the Aldredge House issues.
  • Peter Loh made a motion to send the Board of Adjustment administrator a copy of the February 2016 resolution on SAHDA letterhead, signed by the president.  Jean Dunkerley seconded the motion. Jean Dean asked to amend Peter’s motion to include distribution of letter to adjacent neighborhoods. A vote was called and the motion carried.
  • Next general meeting March 15.
  • Children’s Easter party is scheduled for March 26.
